How to make multi-layered plywood maps

Multi-layered plywood maps are a beautiful and original way to decorate your home or make a unique gift. These maps are made from several layers of plywood, each representing a different element of the map. You can make multi-layered maps of various places, such as cities, lakes, mountains, etc.

Necessary materials:

  • Plywood of various thicknesses (3 mm birch plywood is a good choice, and for the layers that will be painted, MDF can be used)
  • Laser cutting machine
  • Vector files of the map – SVG, PDF, DXF
  • Wood glue
  • Water-based stain (optional)
  • Frame (optional)

Manufacturing process:

  1. Prepare the vector files of the map. You can find ready-made files online or create your own. I use QGIS, which is free software, MAPbox Studio – to extract the water area. But there is also a relatively new website that is paid, but will give you the finished files for cutting – I have a video on how to work with it here – https://studio.youtube.com/video/Uf2UZgQl4SM/edit. 2. Set up the laser machine. Make sure the machine is set to the correct cutting and engraving parameters. Do tests.

  3. Cut the layers from the plywood. Use the laser machine to cut the layers from the plywood according to the vector files.

  4. Assemble the map. Use glue to assemble the layers of the map.

  5. Paint the map (optional). You can paint the map to give it color and depth. I use a water-based stain. I usually color the frame and the layer with the earth’s surface.

  6. Add a frame (optional). You can add a frame to the map to protect it and give it a finished look.

Tips:

  • Choose plywood of different thicknesses to create different effects.
  • Use glue that is suitable for wood.
  • Be careful when cutting and assembling the map.
  • Use your creativity to create unique and beautiful maps.

Conclusion

Making multi-layered plywood maps is a fun and creative activity. With a little practice and patience, you can create beautiful and unique maps that will decorate your home or make a wonderful gift.
